Okay, I have a hard time believing this is legit—even in prototype form—but the concept is fantastic nonetheless. The ‘Optimus’ keyboard has tiny OLED screens embedded in each key, allowing it to display context information on the fly. In Photoshop? You’ve got Photoshop icons, complete with alt functions (at least in my head this is how it works).

OLED screens are massively expensive, though, especially full-color ones, so I’d say this is just someone having a good idea—a great idea, actually. When this becomes affordable, we’ll see this happen. Start your patent attorneys now.

Update: T3 confirms it’s a prototype.

She found out the hard way that while pulling a gun on the Best Buy television repairman and telling him that, “You’re not leaving until the TV is fixed,” actually isn’t a good way to get your TV fixed, it is an excellent way to get yourself charged with aggravated assault and false imprisonment. The repairman, who had already tried and failed to fix her TV several times, calmed her down by calling Best Buy and getting them to agree to give her a new TV, then left and called the cops.

I like Pantech just fine, as I think they make some pretty interesting phones (even if we never actually get to use them, since they are Korea-only). The new ‘T-slide’ phones, however, are pretty ugly, and I’m not just saying that because I find the man in the cut-off jean jacket threatening. I mean, I guess it’s handy that the screens turn and the keypads slide out, but since both of those features don’t really do anything (if you need widescreen viewing on your phone, turn it), this is one time I’m not jealous of our nerdy Korean counterparts.

The key technology behind both HD DVD and Blu-ray is the blue laser, an evolutionary development of the infrared and red lasers used in CD and DVD players. The wavelength of the light coming from the blue lasers in both high-def disc formats is 405 nanometers (billionths of a meter), which is shorter than the DVD wavelength of 650 nanometers (a pure red) and nearly half the CD wavelength of 780 nanometers (in the near-visible infrared). Using a shorter laser wavelength allows a much smaller spot to be focused onto the reflective data layer (see “Laser spot sizes” in the diagram below).

How BitTorrent Plans To Get Sued

While the entertainment industry may not really understand BitTorrent, they know they don't like it, and they know they've been searching for a good reason to sue Bram Cohen, the creator of BitTorrent. It looks like he might be handing them just what they're looking for. It appears that Cohen and a few others are getting ready to launch a BitTorrent search engine. Prior to this, the main reason that BitTorrent wasn't getting sued, was because it was clear that the technology was just the protocol. Suing over BitTorrent would be like suing "FTP" or "SMTP email." It's just the protocol. The real issue, was the ability to search and find unauthorized material -- which BitTorrent was totally separate from... until now. Hollywood has already gone after other BitTorrent search engines. While we agree that running such a search engine should be perfectly legal, clearly the entertainment industry doesn't see things that way. After all, it's just a search engine finding what's already out there. There shouldn't be anything illegal about that. However, with the Supreme Court still figuring out the final decision in the Grokster case, it seems like this BitTorrent search engine is the type of thing entertainment industry lawyers will pounce on. Of course, maybe that will just lead to another landmark lawsuit. The BitTorrent folks are being smart about the positioning on this one, by the way. They're making it clear that they view this BitTorrent search engine as a way for anyone to distribute their own, homemade video works -- rather than a system used to support unauthorized transfers of content.

Microsoft takes a look at the Playstation 3

Major Nelson has an exhaustive look at the specs of the PS3 vs. 360. Microsoft engineers sat down and took a look at what Sony placed on the table. Sure, the engineers are biased — they made the 360 after all. But we’re sure y’all will call them on any spinning.

The four parter breaks down the battle by CPU, GPU and bandwidth. I’ll leave it to the pros out there to make heads or tails out of it, but Major’s conclusion wraps it up with a well-mannered glove in Sony’s face.

”When you break down the numbers, Xbox 360 has provably more performance than PS3. Keep in mind that Sony has a track record of over promising and under delivering on technical performance. The truth is that both systems pack a lot of power for high definition games and entertainment.”

Microsoft seems to be comfortable with where they are hardware-wise. The one thing I can say for sure is they don’t have anything to fear on the services side. Xbox Live! is alone at the top, and no one seems interested in trying to take them down. Yeah, everyone’s trying to throw in multimedia thingies, too. But unless those thingies make my games more fun…bah!

PS3 pics and specs: leaked?

Disclaimer, disclaimer, yadda yadda. We’re kind of hoping these pics aren’t legit because frankly, we’re not feelin’ the love for the design. But we digress! The specs that accompany these shots are saying the Sony PS3 will have wireless controllers, a 160GB hard disk, 1 CELL processor running at 4GHz (pumping out 256 GFLOPS worth of power — getting close to 1.21 gigawatts, here, folks), ethernet port, USB 2.0, memory stick duo support, and will read Blu-ray disks only. Backward compatibility for the older systems won’t be via the drive mechanism, then, but will be achieved via emulation in the CELL processor itself, providing retro compatibility with both PS1 and PS2. Controllers will be very similar to the PS2 controllers, plus add wireless. All of the above will be seen in the first line, to be released in Japan in March 2006, with a second version to follow in late 2006 that will be sporting a 400GB hard drive. The rev2 will also apparently be able to record TV shows on Blu-ray disks (like we said: disclaim, disclaim…). More nitty gritty specs via the read link, and another pic after the jump.

GTA Defense Gets Man Off of Homicide Charge

Two guys got in a car crash trying to reenact a move from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The passenger allegedly pushed down on the driver’s knee, making him accelerate, and then yanked up the emergency break. The Accura spun out at 60 mph and smashed into a tree, killing the passenger. The driver recently avoided a homicide by drunken driving conviction, after telling the jury it was his buddies fault.

The driver said that right before the accident, the passenger told him: We can make it, we cane make it, just like in the game.
I suppose if you add enough alcohol to the formula people begin thinking they can do anything.

Redesigned Atari 2600 for $30

If you were as disappointed as I was when word came out that the Atari Flashback was going to look like the generic Atari 7800, then take heart. The Atari Flashback 2.0 is going full-on retro with faux wood paneling, two 2600 controllers and 40 games of 70s and 80s goodness.

The Flashback 2.0, which will include original game code reengineered to work on the modern chipset, will be out this summer for $30.

Tiger Reviewed (Verdict: Mossberg Says Tiger is Good)

Walt Mossberg, tech guru for the Polo shirt and boat shoes crowd, says that Tiger is a real XP killer. He especially likes Spotlight and the new RSS feature in Safari—in which Gizmodo will be a default destination come tomorrow afternoon. Woo woo!

Anyway, Walt really likes Dashboard and Parental Controles but said there are some issues with slow-down in initial releases, but nothing a good upgrade to a dual CPU G5 won’t fix. [via gizmodo]
